Gather round, everybody, as I relay unto you yet more of my wonderful grom-scoveries I have made since purchasing a Grom last week. But this edition is special as it is the LAST such post I will be making. Why?
1) NO. ONE. Will give the biker wave to a Grom except for scooters. EVERY. SCOOTER. Will give a wave or a cheer. Which, honestly, is kinda fun. Goofballs-in-arms, yo!
2) After many phone calls this week, I have discovered that my insurance is not going up 100$/6 months, like I thought previously. No, it is 100$/month for liability on a grom. I shopped around and while other places handle the grom for a lot less, the overall cost is still higher since they ding either the triumph or KLR a lot harder. And I’d have some single bike policies but that ends up being a hassle and I lose my multi-vehicle discount through progressive.
So, after a week and about 100 miles of silliness, I threw the grom off my insurance and onto craigslist. I have multiple people agreeing to my price which is 300$ more than I paid for it.
tl;dr - I made 300$ riding a grom for a week because insurance is a scam .

That’s insane for insurance. I pay $175 a year for 3 bikes through progressive one of them is even full coverage, a 2015 CB500x.

Michigan is the worst state for insurance save for maybe a handful of high density population areas. The KLR with full coverage and the triumph with liability are ~800 for the year. So for the grom to cost as much as them is absurd. Rider will give me a good price for the grom and the KLR but it costs the same for liability on the triumph as it does for full coverage on the triumph through progressive. State farm is way out of the ballpark. I’m making some more calls since my car insurance went up after my two accidents in winter (neither were at faults).

I’m floored. I don’t understand why bikes are so much up there. The weather’s so shitty so most bikes can’t be ridden more than a couple months a year.

Michigan has an “unlimited health coverage” clause for insurance providers that states, as a brief summary, that they must provide for all medical expenditures caused by an accident, for that person’s life. This combines with us being a “no-fault” state to cause some hilarious insurance games.

It sucks that this didn't work out. But I knew at the price you paid you weren't going to lose money .

Holy moly...you have chosen wisely. No Grom is worth that much.
One does wonder though...if you'd bought the Kawasaki, would the insurance issue/cost be similar? Or does Michigan have a Grom Tax by stealth?

Michigan, especially grand rapids, does have an infamous “grom squad” known simply as “The Hooligans” who do an event called “Murder the mitten”. I’m pretty sure the ratio of groms to Z125s is 20:1. The Z125 would probably half the price, if not less. But whatever, the Z125 isn’t as good. So I’m glad things went the way they did.

I’m bummed I can’t do some more of the stupid shit I wanted to do. I was planning on riding through some construction sites and riding out to a lake about 50 miles away and making a day trip out of it and do some fishing via a grom. But.....yeah. It’s not as bad as it could’ve been for sure, just frustrating that insurance is what pulls the trigger.

Wait, what? I pay $135 a YEAR for both my Zuma 125 and my wife's 150 Vespa. Full coverage.

In Michigan?

A couple of my mates here have insurance for their Groms in the low teens; a nd yes, full coverage at $100 deductibles.

No. Illinois.

Yeah, some other companies offer it for a “proper” price IMO, but then the KLR or triumph shoot up in price.

I was just quoted $300 for the year for the Gr om I’m getting. I am using progressive and I live in Michigan.

I got nothing. Granted, my car rates also went up after my winter ice-capades so I’m sure that is playing a part in this despite me being found not at fault in either incident. But progressive won’t budge.

That freaking sucks.

I might move the Fiero to a collector car insurance and see if I can switch the KLR to liability only during the
w
int
er months through rider or someone like that
. I kinda knew the grom was short term when I got it but not quite this short. This is the first time I’ve had my insurance rates jack up despite me supposedly having accident forgiveness and not being at fault, so I’m kinda spooked at the sudden increase on top of a toy purchase possibly costing me hundreds just to have the opportunity to ride.
It’s not the end of the world, and I *can* afford it, but I’d rather not have to pay more for what I already had...

I ride a Husky 350s. I wave at all Groms and Ruckus’. I never wave at Harley riders.

I definitely recommend collector car insurance for the Fiero. It's very cheap.

Yeah. Th e limited miles might be a slight pain, but I think that’s all in my head. I’ll only really be doing a few big trips during the year and those would be events, not daily commuting.

That insurance price is stupid. My 1200 Monster (!) is like 40/month for full coverage.

I never came close to the mileage limit when I had it on my '74 Apollo.
